AI workflows use several different control layers. They are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Character cards are useful for inference-time control. They do not change the model weights. They guide the model while the card is present.
RAG
RAG means retrieval-augmented generation.
Instead of training new behavior into the model, a system retrieves relevant external information and injects it into the prompt context.
RAG is useful for knowledge:
- documents
- lore
- policies
- facts
- reference material
RAG is less direct for teaching durable style, pacing, or conversational habits. It tells the model what to know or reference. It does not necessarily change how the model tends to behave.
LoRAs
LoRA stands for low-rank adaptation.
In practical terms, a LoRA is a lightweight specialization layer trained on top of a base model. It is commonly used to adapt style, behavior, format, character tendencies, or domain patterns without retraining the entire model.
A LoRA can be easier to distribute, swap, test, or combine than a full fine-tuned model.
For conversational and roleplay workflows, a LoRA may be used to shape:

- format
- dialogue rhythm
- narration style
- character behavior
- response tendencies

Fine-Tuning
Fine-tuning is deeper model adaptation.
